I founded Highland Restoration, Inc. in 1998 in order to pursue a lifelong interest in historic architecture and, more specifically, to fulfill a commitment to the preservation of the unique building traditions of southeast New England. You may have heard the saying, buy land because they aren't making any more of it. The same can be said about the work of the original builders. Not only are they not building more, but (unlike land) their work is slowly being destroyed by time, attrition and changes in use. Our mission is to offer the building field the preservation carpentry skills necessary to restore, repair or renovate historic buildings without losing their distinct character in the process. This is our mission, our passion and our daily business.
My childhood was spent raising corn, soybeans, wheat and tobacco on a farm in Freemont, NC. I am an Eagle Scout. I received Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from the University of North Carolina - Charlotte in 1984 and a Masters of Science degree in Business Management from Troy State University, Alabama in 1995. In 1997, I graduated from the Preservation Carpentry program at North Bennet Street School in Boston. I served 10 years in the U. S. Air Force as a Navigator. I've been a member of the Rhode Island Air National Guard since then and currently hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. I've been involved in combat operations in Panama, the Balkans, Afghanistan and both wars in Iraq.
As a graduate of the Preservation Carpentry program of the North Bennett Street School, I am specifically trained to alter or repair historic woodwork. This important program is providing our historic built environment with artisans trained to understand it. While there, I interned at Poplar Forest, the restoration of Thomas Jefferson's second home, now a museum.
Highland Restoration, Inc. is always prepared to play a useful role in any historic project, whether it is by furnishing building condition reports early in the project or by furnishing faithful, accurate reproduction millwork from our own shop. Whether it is a well known, high style museum project or just the everyday historic house next door, put us on your project team for reliable, committed management of the historic woodwork.
