Wood Casement Sash Restoration
Wakefield, Rhode Island
Restoration of 87 Pieces of Casement Wood Window Sash

Wood Window Restoration Project Stashed in Attic.

Brookside Manor, a 5,000 square foot bed and breakfast, required the restoration or reproduction of 87 pieces of wood window sash as part of a larger house restoration. Approximately two-thirds of the windows had been replaced with vinyl replacements in the 80's. Rather than throw the windows in the dumpster, however, the vinyl window contractor (thinking ahead!) thoughtfully stashed all the original wood casement sash in the large attic. These posed some challenges since wooden casement windows are prone to sag, over time.

We removed the replacement windows and found the original casings to be serviceable. All the mullions had been removed to accommodate the vinyl windows. Mullions and missing casework were milled in our shop from clear red cedar. Reproduction sash was made from Honduran mahogany. All paint and glass were removed from the existing sash and casing and 884 pieces of glass, in all, were installed.  Years later, the owner tells us that the windows remain stable and operable, an additional long term benefit of restoring original, existing units.
